A little penguin family with little penguin hats. • The Christmas Market hosted by @kairostraders was a blast and my penguin ornaments were a hit. Once upon a time I went to see a movie everyone was talking about at my high school. I didn’t get it. Then I went to see it again and something happened. I couldn’t stop quoting it. Or using my chapstick. Or wanting a boondoggle keychain. Or eating quesadillas. Cinematic genius. • So anyways I’ve been working on this folk art inspired illustrated alphabet and have mainly been using animals to represent each letter, but couldn’t help myself today when the first thing that popped into my head was that “N” is for Napoleon dynamite. Obviously. • I will likely come up with a different alternate for this letter as not everyone may share the same love of Napoleon, but this is the one that will be hung in my house 😆. Sometimes being an artist means doing what you need to do instead of what you want to do. • Early on when I began painting, I wouldn’t “feel like” painting at times. Then I would hear my dad’s voice in my head, “when motivation wanes, discipline kicks in.” I surprised myself by finding that I often loved the end result of painting a piece as a discipline (whereas my “inspirations” could often end up being disappointing). • It’s easy to think that artists have sudden urges of inspiration and then create their best work, but that’s often not the case! Inspiration certainly does come, but it’s getting the work done and continuing to practice and try new things when you simply don’t feel like it that keeps you moving forward in your career. • At other times, you may simply want to do ALL THE THINGS and have trouble focusing (something @newtopic_artwork and I call being “overly inspired”). Little Rose Girl. • First attempt at gouache (had to google the spelling of that) and I think I’m in love. Watercolor is not so much my friend, as it’s constantly just doing what it wants to do and doesn’t care what I’m going for 😆.
